Tourism is the main income earner for Pacific countries like Vanuatu, Fiji and Palau and with the COVID-19 vaccination underway in some territories, there's hope that international travel could resume soon.
But the World Bank is urging caution and calling Pacific countries to go through a phased approach in re-opening their borders that could see the full resumption of international travel by 2022.
World Bank's Pacific Lead Economist David Gould says the Pacific Islands face more risk in opening up their borders, as their health systems are not as well equipped as some other countries.
"Regardless of the vaccine or not, all the measures the countries are taking or need to take in terms of testing, tracing and treatment will need to be re-enforced," he said.
